Bombing Will Commence In Three, Two …

I usually don’t trifle with international affairs here, but this issue is close to my heart.

Iran is starting to load fuel into a nuclear reactor.  The simple question is picking the date Israel will nuke said plant into oblivion.

When I was a  journalist, I used to cover the nuclear material production facilities here in the U.S., so I know a little about the subject.

This is so bad on so many levels that clichés escape me.  The only saving grace in all this is Iran, along with North Korea, are at least level-headed enough to keep all us warmonger-types in line.

Like if we get out of line, they’ll just nuke us for peace’s sake. So we got that going for us.

Israel has already issued its “totally unacceptable” statement. In the South, that translate to “that dog won’t hunt.” Elsewhere, it translate into “we are going to blow you and your reactor up.”

Iran, despite having one of the world’s largest oil reserves, apparently does not have sufficient refinery capacity to refine the oil. Thus, in their logic, the need for a nuclear reactor to produce electricity.

Crazy idea: why not invest all that time, energy, technology and money into building more refineries instead  of a nuclear reactor? Just a thought.

But no, we are going defy all sorts of U.N. sanctions, threaten to blow up Israel and the U.S. and then wonder why a few of us are freaking out.

Fortunately, the Russian-built reactor – yes Russian – comes with all sorts of safeguards and protection measures. Like the Russians are going to hang around for a couple of years to make sure the Iranians don’t do something silly, like try to enrich the fuel to weapons-grade.

Oh, and our Russian allies will also keep watch over all the spent nuclear fuel, which contains plutonium, which is used to make a nuclear weapon, which means we are all hosed.

And we are even going to have the International Atomic Energy Agency double-check the Russians, you know, just in case.

History sorta escapes me right now, but didn’t the IEEA have a little problem with another “I” country – like Iraq – on the same issue?

Anyway, all sorts of countries, like England and France, are issuing statements saying this deal with the Russian oversight shows we can all hold hands and play together. And isn’t it wonderful that one of the craziest countries in the world now has the benefits of nuclear energy. But not nuclear weapons, no. Just won’t happen.  (Note to self: Keep adding more of the same to assure readers)

According to several wire reports, the Iranian nuclear site is heavily guarded with soldiers and batteries of anti-aircraft systems.

And I’ll leave you with this, according to ynetnews.com,that came out today:

As Iranian and Russian engineers began loading fuel into Iran’s first nuclear power plant on Saturday, Iran’s hard-line President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad promised a global response if his country is attacked, in an interview with Qatari daily Al-Sharq.

“Our options will have no limits… They will touch the entire planet,” he said Saturday in response to a question about Tehran’s reaction in the event of such an attack.

So there you go.
