The Ultimate Wife

Nineteen years ago today, the Little Black Dress wore pink and said “I do.”

I am a very, very, fortunate man.

She has given me three SONs of Thunder. And after that, what else is really important?

We have fought, we have yelled, we have cried, and yes, we have thought why did we ever do this.

Yet we have laughed, we have done stupid stuff, we have taken on the worst and to God only, survived.

One of my favorite pastors repeatedly said a very simple thing about marriage – Love is a Choice.

It is a decision that is made daily.

All I know is this – when my giants come with swords drawn, blood flowing from their mouths of earlier victims, I laugh.

Because my sword is ready. And the The Dress’ sword shines brighter than mine.

At our recital dinner The Dress sang a song. One she wrote. She started it and didn’t like how it was going, so she started over. She started over in front of 500 people.

Here it is:

Love Lights a Winters Night

Far off in the distance

Who is that I see?

Tall and handsome, my love

Ah, it is he.

He waits patiently

Then draws close to me

I reach out to touch him

To be sure of what I see

There is a glow about him

His eyes clear as the skies.

What is the source of it?

It’s the love that lights his eyes.

This is the one for whom

I’ve waited all of my life

He has come at last

To take me for his wife.

It is happening here.

In the midst of candlelight

Time is standing still on this lovely Winters’ Night
