Weekend Column – A Modest Tribute
I have no intention in this column to add to the myriad of trolls and other so-called experts as to why someone would “cowardly” commit suicide, nor discuss the stigma of depression.
Instead, I prefer to remember Robin Williams as a genius. A man who made us think. A man who made us laugh until it hurt.
Some of his best pulled from various websites:
“Goooooooood morning Vietnam! It’s 0600 hours. What does the ‘O’ stand for? O my God, it’s early!” – Adrian Cronauer, Good Morning Vietnam (1987
“Carpe diem. Seize the day, boys. Make your lives extraordinary.” – John Keating, Dead Poets Society (1989)
“My first day as a woman and I’m getting hot flashes.” – Mrs Doubtfire/Daniel Hillard, Mrs Doubtfire (1993)
“You don’t know about real loss because it only occurs when you’ve loved something more than you love yourself. I doubt you’ve ever dared to love anybody that much.” – Sean Maguire, Good Will Hunting (1997)
“Never pick a fight with an ugly person, they’ve got nothing to lose.”
“Why do they call it rush hour when nothing moves?”
“Do you think God gets stoned? I think so … Look at the platypus.”
“In England, if you commit a crime, the police don’t have a gun and you don’t have a gun. If you commit a crime, the police will say, ‘Stop, or I’ll say stop again.’
“A woman would never make a nuclear bomb. They would never make a weapon that kills. They’d make a weapon that makes you feel bad for a while.”
“Everyone has these two visions when they hold their child for the first time. The first is your child as an adult saying, ‘I want to thank the Nobel Committee for this award.’ The other is, ‘You want fries with that?'”
“You’re only given one little spark of madness. You mustn’t lose it.”
“No matter what people tell you, words and ideas can change the world.”
“Divorce is expensive. I used to joke they were going to call it ‘all the money,’ but they changed it to ‘alimony.’ It’s ripping your heart out through your wallet.”
“You’re not perfect, sport, and let me save you the suspense: this girl you’ve met, she’s not perfect either. But the question is whether or not you’re perfect for each other.” – Sean Maguire, Good Will Hunting

I was never that much into poetry until I watched Mr. Williams in Dead Poet’s Society. The poem “O Captain! My Captain!” by Walt Whitman featured in the film is an appropriate ending, I believe.
O Captain! my Captain! our fearful trip is done,
The ship has weather’d every rack, the prize we sought is won,
The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting,
While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring;
But O heart! heart! heart!
O the bleeding drops of red,
Where on the deck my Captain lies,
Fallen cold and dead.
