The Mountains Are Down To Hills

Jul 2, 2009 by

Sorry for the delay in posting lately, but we’ve been going through a few small life changes – one funeral and a rather large move half-way across the country.

And quite a move: two large U-Haul trucks (driven by movers who’ve become pretty much family); No.1 Son of Thunder and myself in one vehicle, and the Little Black Dress, No. 2 and No. 3 Sons of Thunder, two cats, one underdog and apparently, one cricket, in the other.

Yet we are slowly reducing a mountain of boxes down to something we can actually see over, which in itself is a major accomplishment.

A few observations:

– Packing is stressful. It is even more so when one of the adults (me) is becoming more and more minimalistic and the other adult (the LBD) thinks “streamlining” means actually throwing away a couple of designer magazines dating back five years.

– Stuff. We have a lot of just “stuff.” As I mentioned, I just don’t want a lot of stuff in my life anymore. My view is simple. We keep stuff we use consistently, otherwise, sell it, give it away or off to the dump. And to her credit, the Little Black Dress did give away a lot. But the Law of Exponential Giving clearly shows that every time you give something away, two other things suddenly appear. Basically, the more you give away, the more stuff you have. I’ve yet to understand this Law.

– The Little Black Dress was very proud of herself for all the stuff she gave/threw away. The fact we still packed and brought several boxes of old magazines of hers and my constant questions of why? consistently fell on deaf ears.

– The rocks. Yes, we packed rocks, lots and lots of landscaping rocks. And when the movers came and I pointed out the small mountain of rocks the LBD planned to take, well, I got a look from them. And I gave them a look back, which basically meant if you want to take it up with the Little Black Dress then just go right ahead, but tell me beforehand because I want to make sure and be out of the way. And so we loaded up the rocks.  And I have to admit we actually used the rocks at our new place, and they actually look really nice. And I am constantly reminded of that fact.

– Storing stuff. Our new house is basically half the size of our old one. But the view is about 10 times as good – on the lake, great breeze, incredible sunrises and sunsets. Nevertheless, such a reduction means if we don’t get rid of stuff, we have to store it. Another simple law. Stuff does not shrink in size. Everything that fit in a large house will not fit in a much smaller one.
According to reports, it becomes effective in click for info order cheap viagra just 30 to 45 minutes to give you fuller, harder, bigger and thicker boner to help you perform well and last longer during intercourse. The basic and most obvious reason for Erectile Dysfunction is said to be a dangerous and annoying disorder which is said to buying cialis online be not good for the heart On the contrary, there are several clinical and biological evidence that testosterone promotes a healthy heart. Sepsis leads to disorders that occur on a cellular level in an abbreviated time period, which closely resembles what occurs to our bodies during a period of 10 months and resumed normal physical mobility buy super viagra Read More Here and range of motion after just a few therapy sessions.
And so we have storage units. And the guy who came up with the idea of getting people to pay him to store their stuff was brilliant. Ranks up there with the inventor of the ice maker. Seriously, we are paying someone to let us have the priviledge of storing our stuff.

– Movers. They become pretty much family, so you’d better get along because they are handling all your precious stuff. And we were fortunate. We actually had a company out of Oklahoma drive down to move us. And they really were like family. They had moved the LBD’s parents’ things into a nursing home, then another one. They had moved other furniture from their house to storage. So we had been together a couple of times before. And that’s why when Rick gave me that look about the landscaping rocks and I told him to take it up with the LBD, well, let’s just say the rocks got packed. Rick had dealt with the LBD before. Rick is a smart man.

– Traveling with pets. It sucks. And hotels/motels are getting pretty tough about accepting them. Even when you’re in the middle of nowhere and the only choice of accommodations is one where they think offering you two bath towels is pretty swank. We tried one place – small town, one stoplight – and right as I’m checking in I notice pets are FORBIDDEN. And they’ll dock you $200 if you have one. So I go out and bring in underdog – all of three pounds soaking wet and in a crate no less. And despite assurances that underdog will remain inside the crate, it’s no-go.

So we go to another place. This one also has a no-pet rule, but the “cleanup” is only a $25 charge. So I’m like looking at the Little Black Dress and suggesting we just leave the cats/underdog in the car. And I get this look of “if anyone is staying in a car …”

And so we do what any self-respecting pet owner would do.  We sneak them in under cover of darkness. And the Sons of Thunder think that’s pretty cool because they’re pretending to be spies carrying the nuclear briefcase and all that.

And so we’ve moved. And we’re emptying boxes left and right.

And we’ve discovered the best part of moving.  It’s a simple equation really.

Boxes + packing paper + match = Bonfire.
