And The Stars Realign

Never let it be said the Sons of Thunder and I can’t handle ourselves without the Little Black Dress.

I am not saying we want to, nor is that our preference, but if The Dress needs to be out of town, we will survive. Such was the case recently as the LBD was out West.

Survive we did. The house remains, there were no broken bones and we did not starve. The last due in part to the convenience of restaurants. And why yes, we did hit the burger and pizza joints.

And for the record, we ate a few healthy things – the build your own yogurt concoction place for one. Talk about total overload – there’s something like 60 items you can add to whichever of 12 yogurt flavors you pick out.  Then there’s the 12 kinds of syrup and half a dozen various sprinkles and such.  And we even hit the healthy/energy/wellness smoothie joint, so there was some Vitamin C mixed in with all the meat.

It was not all take-out or sit-down. The Sons are becoming quite the little chefs, each taking their turn one evening.

Eldest grilled butterfly pork chops marinated in garlic, olive oil and rosemary, to perfection. Middle Son concocted a beef stroganoff  that was pure awesomeness. Youngest made up our crab bisque. There”s a photo floating around on Facebook of Youngest with an 8-inch chef knife doing his prep thing. I’m not posting it here because I have no desire to talk with the Department of Children and Family Services right now.

As is the case, the Sons somehow managed to camp out in my bedroom. Rather, the bedroom of The Dress, of which I am allowed to spend quality time. So we’ve got sleeping pads and sleeping bags pretty much all over the place. And the Sons have rather lengthy discussions each night about whose turn it actually is to sleep in the bed.

You would think that would be rather simple – take turns. But these are the Sons, and one night one doesn’t feel well, or another is feeling more “needy” or whatnot. Or, one Son sneaks into the bed in the middle of the night. This constitutes a party foul as the original sleeper demands another night because they didn’t get full solo time. So no, a simple “let’s just each take a turn” turns into a parliamentary debate. Every. Single. Night.

And then there is the whole issue of the bed pillows. I wrote a column years ago about our pillows having babies. Nothing has changed. You can read about it here. Let’s just say this was one area where we failed. Failed in the sense we all agreed not to spend the 45 minutes necessary each morning to put the pillows back. They stayed in the corner. At least until The Dress returned.

Prior to the LBD’s return, there was – naturally – a rather frenzied cleanup effort. Oh, to have a Cat in the Hat nearby. But no, we were left to our own devices. I was bound and determined not to go through another inspection/grilling as when The Dress last went away. At that time, there was some discussion about the way the Sons looked, smelled, what they wore to school, the condition of the bathrooms, bedrooms, kitchen, etc., etc., etc.

If you’re interested, you can enjoy reading about that little coming home event here. I believe my only retort was “they’re alive.”

But our efforts paid off. The cleaning part that is. The Dress pronounced the domicile adequate upon her return. In fact, all she said she really needed to do was “fluff.”

Said “fluffing” primarily involved … wait for it … wait … wait – the pillows in the living room. Mathematically, there are 13,764 various combinations possible in arranging said pillows. We obviously picked the wrong combo. But we did clean the toilets, so we got a brownie point or two out of that.

To celebrate the LBD’s return, the two younger Sons decided to create a breakfast feast  – served in bed the next morning. And let us just let the mad scientists out of the asylum shall we?

As I recall, said concoction involved cereal (Lucky Charms and Cheerios), vanilla ice cream, chocolate syrup and white chocolate chips. The Dress would like to point out the cereal was whole grain.

And so The Dress is home and the stars are realigned.
