Political Correctness Run Amok
Let us pause for a moment to remember the day, July 1, 2015. It was the day America finally lost all rational thought and succumbed to what has been at the forefront of this once great country’s collective mindset these last few days.
The Gods of Political Correctness have won.
No longer will Daisy Duke show off her, well, daisy dukes. Cousins Bo and Luke have disappeared, allegedly to some CIA debriefing complex. And General Lee is headed to the scrapyard.
TV Land has taken the “Dukes of Hazzard” off the air. Warner Bros., which owns the franchise, has halted production of toy replicas of the 1969 orange Dodge Charger dubbed General Lee.
Why?
Because a racist idiot by the name of Dylann Roof shot and killed nine African American worshippers at a Bible study at the historically black Emanuel A.M.E. Church in Charleston. Reporters later found pictures of him sitting on his car, with a license plate featuring various versions of the Confederate flag.
Apparently the flag made him do it. So let’s remove all traces of the flag.
The shootings have led to mounting calls to remove the Confederate battle flag from the grounds of the state capitol in South Carolina.
It is viewed by many as a symbol of hatred and racism. It is viewed by others as a symbol of the state’s heritage and role in the Civil War – or War of Northern Aggression, if you prefer. Don’t want to insult anyone.
What it is turning into is a despicable example of the PC crowd falling over themselves in an effort to show they are the most plugged in to the cultural niceties of the day.
It’s a bunch of hypocrisy.
You can’t find a Confederate flag on Amazon. But you can buy a USSR or Nazi SS flag. Six million Jews exterminated; millions upon millions of civilians and soldiers killed in World War II. But you can still buy the Nazi flag.
The vast amount of goods sold in those big box stores are produced in countries with some of the worst human rights violations in the world – China for example.
Yet it is the Confederate flag that has stirred up Corporate America’s righteousness.
We believe the Confederate flag is an important symbol of this country’s heritage, especially in the South. We also understand that it has been stripped of its historical role by those who dwell in hate – racists, neo-Nazis, the KKK.
To many, especially African-Americans, it remains a symbol of racism and we don’t support flying it on the courthouse steps in every Southern town.
But when will it stop?
Should we ban future showings of Gone With The Wind? Putting aside the first Academy Award to an African-American came out of that movie.
Why stop there?
Should we not, in appeasement to our American Indian neighbors, ban all Westerns? What about “The Alamo” and other derogatory Hispanic films? We could go on.
Let’s face it, if we continue on this trend, how much longer before the calls begin to remove all traces of Confederate statues and war memorials from even our own Old Courthouse property?
Time to take five and slow down this political correctness run amok.
