“Where, O Death, Is Your Victory?”

Jun 9, 2009 by

The body that is sown is perishable, it is raised imperishable; it is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory; it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power; it is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body.” I Corinthians 15: 42-44.

And why are we starting this blog with a scripture?

Simple really.

The Little Black Dress has lost her mom.

And the world has no idea who, and what, it has lost.

To her friends, she was Eddi, or “Eddi-Spaghetti.” To the Sons of Thunder, she was Mimi; and to me, well she was Mom No. 2.

And the woman adored me.  I may be good, but I’m not that good – or deserving.  When the Little Black Dress and I got married, she told everyone that if she died right then, she would be happy. Simply because her daughter was with me.

You have no idea how hard it is to live up to that.  But I try.

Edna May Schneiderman Carlin died June 8, 2009. In her sleep, peacefully, with a Legion of angels biting at the bit to take her home. And I know they were all angling for position, because there isn’t an angel in heaven who wouldn’t want the honor of escorting Eddi home.

It was time. The ravages of Alzheimer’s, the complete shut-down of her body, finally took their toll.  She and “Dad No. 2” were a month shy of their 50th wedding anniversary.

Eddi knew no stranger.

She would fly up to Alaska to visit us and when she got off the plane, she’d be surrounded by people. Young, old, it didn’t matter. She’d be there exchanging addresses and phone numbers. Everyone would be fighting to carry her bags.

We’d be at some restaurant or store, and I’d turn around and Eddi was over talking to someone. And I’d be like “mom, you just can’t go up to strangers.”

And she’d just smile and say “why?”

And I’d say something about it not being safe and you don’t know those people and something could happen and …

And she’d just smile and find the next one.

You see, Eddi was a Prayer Warrior.

We often wonder why God doesn’t answer prayers – at least answer them in the way we want Him to. But if you think about it, the world probably would be in a pretty sorry place if God just gave us carte-blanche on prayer.

Eddi was different.  When you asked Eddi to pray for you, you’d better be absolutely sure it was what you wanted, and it was lined up with God’s will.

Because Eddi would pray. And heaven would get silent.

I can just imagine Moses, Elijah, Peter and John having some conversation with Jesus and Eddi starts praying. And Jesus holds up his finger to his mouth and everyone

just

stops.

And

listens.

And God would glance over at some angel with a “why are you still here” look because whatever Eddi prayed for was now the No. 1 priority in heaven.

I said earlier the world doesn’t know what it has lost. And what it’s lost is a Prayer Warrior of unspeakable power.

I will miss her. But I am fortunate in that Eddi gave me one final gift. She left her heart, her true being, within the Little Black Dress.

Sons become their fathers; daughters become their mothers.

And in my case, that’s a good thing.

“For I am convinced that neither death nor life,  neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8: 37-39

  1. Thank you for paying such a beautiful tribute to my mother and in turn to me. You are right she did truly adore you and so do I. I thank you for the husband you are to me and the Father you are to the Sons of Thunder. Iwill always love you. Love, The Little Black Dress

This is such a blessing. Your Mother and Father must be very proud of you.

Through Corby, I’m certain that I knew Mimi. She has been a precious friend with such a sweet sprit and unending talents. I grieve with her with the loss of her mother. It was, indeed, a peaceful end to what could have been an extended and painful illness for all. I miss my mother daily, but consider her quiet and painless death, in her sleep, as a gift from God.

Treasure the wonderful memories with your boys to keep her memory alive.
    Thanks for sharing ….
With warm thoughts of encouragement as you face the coming days,
    Betsy
